New York Style Cheesecake is known for its creamy, rich, dense and heavy indulgent. There are two versions of cheesecakes in NYC; one made with cream cheese, and the one made with ricotta cheese referred to as 'Italian Cheesecake' that has drier texture and cheesier taste. Both versions are delicious, but heavy. I mean they are literally heavy – 2 lb cream cheese is needed to make 9” cake in a traditional recipe.

Most popular Junior’s and Veniero’s cheesecakes are delicious but too heavy for me. Eileen’s Special Cheesecakes are different. Located in Nolita since 1975, Eileen continues to bake light, airily, creamy, and not overly sweet cheesecakes. Her cheesecakes are based on her own mother’s recipe.

Eileen's cheesecakes come different sizes and flavors. In addition to the classic pain flavor, a variety of toppings are available such as strawberry, cherry, pineapple, banana, amaretto, cookies & cream, chocolate raspberry…and more. The cheesecake sizes are mini, 6” and 10”.

I love their mini cheesecakes. The mini size is about 3.5” diameters and $3.50 per piece. Strawberry mini cheesecakes are my favorite. Each mini cheesecake is topped with a glazed fresh strawberry in the center, and surrounded with a graham crust. The light and creamy texture with a little bit of crust, Eileen’s cheesecakes satisfy me every time.

ニューヨークのデザートといえば、ニューヨーク・スタイル・チーズケーキ。濃厚でクリーミーな味で知られています。NYには２種類のタイプのチーズケーキがあり、クリームチーズを使用したもの、そして、リコッタチーズを使用したイタリアンチーズケーキと呼ばれるものです。伝統的なレシピによると、23cmのチーズケーキを作るのに1Kgのクリームチーズを使用ということ。文字通り重いケーキです。

ニューヨークで有名な Junior’s や Veniero’s のチーズケーキは、美味しいけれど濃厚すぎてとても一切れ全部は食べられない、と感じる人も多いですが、Eileen’s Special Cheescake のチーズケーキは違います。 甘すぎずクリーミーな口当たりなので軽く食べれてしまいます。今も現役でお店でチーズケーキを作っている Eileen は、彼女自身の母親のレシピを元に、１９７５年、まだ発展していなかった Nolita 地域にお店をオープンして以来、変わらない味を作り続けています。

小さな店内の奥にあるキッチンで焼かれるチーズケーキはすべて手作り。フルーツをのせたものやチョコ味など種類がたくさんあって迷いますが、こちらのお店には小さいミニサイズのチーズケーキ ($3.50) があるので、数種類試してお気に入りを見つけるのもいいですね。近所にあるのでよく通いますが、やっぱり基本のプレーンとストロベリーがのったシンプルなチーズケーキを選ぶことが多いです。
